BMI is a general screening guide for adults, not a medical diagnosis. It can misread muscular builds, and it does not apply to children or during pregnancy. For health decisions, see a qualified professional.

How BMI works

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres, squared. Doctors use it as a first screening step because it correlates with body-fat risk across large populations. Its blind spots are real — a rugby player and a couch fan can share a BMI with very different health — so treat the number as a starting point for a conversation, not a verdict. We show your figure next to the healthy weight range for your height, which most people find more actionable than the index alone.
