Sale signs are designed to confuse — this ends it
'Up to 70% off', 'extra 20% at checkout', 'was 120, now 79': shops stack numbers so the final price is the one thing you cannot see. The honest maths is two steps — discount off the tag, tax on what remains — and this calculator shows every intermediate figure, so a 'deal' has to prove itself. Stacked discounts multiply rather than add (20% then 20% is 36% off, not 40%), which is exactly the sort of thing the breakdown makes visible.
